Directive Speech In Criminal Court At Surakarta Courthouse: A Sociopragmatics Analysis

There are two purposes of this research: (1) to describe the implementation of directive speech found in criminal court at Surakarta Courthouse, and (2) to describe the politeness strategy in criminal court at Surakarta Courthouse.

This research is a qualitative research. The data in this research is the speeches which contain directive speech and politeness. Data source in this research is conversation which is found in the criminal court at Surakarta Courthouse. Data collection is done through site observation. While observing, the researchers also record to the conversation. The next step is to analyze the data by using heuristic method.

The finding of this research is that the directive speech found in criminal court at Surakarta Courthouse consist of asking, suggesting, prohibiting, giving advice, telling,  urging, and reminding. The implementation of the directive speech is mainly stated by judges, instead of lawyers and attorneys. On the other hand, the politeness strategy is realized through bald on strategy. However, the politeness indicator which aims at softening the illocution found in the criminal court are “tolong” (help), mohon (please) etc.
