This study is a descriptive qualitative study which aims at describing the use of formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence in the translation of the biography of Michelle Obama on the Embassy of the United States official website and its effects on the accuracy and acceptability of the result.

The data in this research are in the form of equivalence and also in the form of score to assess the accuracy and acceptability of the translation. The data in this research were obtained from the biography of Michelle Obama entitled First Lady Michelle Obama on the Embassy of the United States official website at http://jakarta.usembassy.gov/.

The sampling technique used in this study is total sampling technique. This type of sampling technique is used based on the objectives of the study. The method of data collection consists of two methods, namely contrastive analysis and document analysis. Contrastive analysis is used to identify the types of equivalence and measure the accuracy of the translation whereas document analysis is used to measure the level of acceptability of the translation.

The result shows that formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence are used in even proportion in the translation. In several cases, formal equivalence is used properly so that it can preserve the form and the content of the SL message and produce natural translation. However, in other cases, formal equivalence is used improperly so that it distorts the message of the original text. Dynamic equivalence is used appropriately in the translation of some parts of the text. The appropriate use of dynamic equivalence can preserve the message in TL and produces natural translations altogether. Meanwhile, dynamic equivalence is used inappropriately in different parts, producing natural translations but distorting the message of the SL text, resulting different readers’ understanding. The result also indicates that the use of formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence in the translation produces less accurate and less acceptable. The use of formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence has not been able to achieve its purpose.
